A Delegation from the National Center for Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases Visits Gezira Center to Launch Diagnostic and Therapeutic Endoscopy Services

In an important step to enhance medical services in Gezira State, a delegation from the National Center for Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases visited the Gezira Center for Gastroenterology and Endoscopic Surgery on Monday, March 17, 2025, to review the gradual restoration of gastroenterology services and the phased reopening of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.

🔹 Five endoscopic procedures were performed, including:
✅ 2 precise diagnostic endoscopies
✅ Endoscopic ligation of esophageal varices
✅ Removal of a foreign body from the esophagus using an endoscope

The technical status of the endoscopy equipment was also assessed in preparation for the reopening of ERCP (biliary endoscopy), a service this center was the first to offer after the war. Prior to the insurgency in Gezira State, 375 ERCP procedures had been performed, and center staff were trained to ensure the continuity of this service after the referral center moved to the National Center for Gastroenterology in Kassala.

🩺 Gastroenterology endoscopy services will be gradually resumed weekly every Monday, eventually expanding to a 24/7 gastrointestinal bleeding emergency service, which was previously available at the center before the insurgency reached Wad Madani.

🔹 Reopening this service represents an important step toward decentralizing medical services, as this service was previously only available at the Mohamed Saleh Idris Center for Gastrointestinal Bleeding.

Phases of the center’s service restoration:
✅ Phase 1: Reopening referral clinics
✅ Phase 2: Resuming gastroenterology endoscopies
🔜 Phase 3: Reopening 24/7 gastrointestinal bleeding emergency services
🔜 Phase 4: Resuming gastroenterology inpatient admissions
🔜 Phase 5: Reopening gastrointestinal surgery

🔴 The center had previously been restored following the same phases at the beginning of the war in April 2023, until the insurgency reached Wad Madani.

📢 A short documentary will be released on Thursday, March 20, 2025, highlighting the efforts of the Federal Ministry of Health, Gezira State Ministry of Health, the National Ministry of Finance and Economy, the Gezira State Ministry of Finance, as well as support from numerous national and international organizations in achieving these milestones.
