Continuation of Biliary Endoscopy Services at Al-Jazira Center for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and Laparoscopic Surgery

A Milestone in Advancing Gastroenterology Services Across the States

Al-Jazira Center for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and Laparoscopic Surgery Delivers as Promised

Today marks a major milestone in the journey of restoring advanced medical services across Sudan’s states, as biliary endoscopy services have successfully continued at the Al-Jazira Center for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and Laparoscopic Surgery, delivered by its dedicated medical team.

Since the outbreak of war in July 2023, biliary endoscopy services were temporarily relocated from the National Center for Gastroenterology to Al-Jazira State. These services continued until the conflict reached the state in December 2023. During that period, 375 biliary endoscopy procedures were successfully performed, in addition to the training of Dr. Salah Dafallah and Dr. Mohamed Bushra in this highly specialized service.

Following the escalation of conflict in Al-Jazira State, biliary endoscopy services across Sudan were suspended for three months. Services later resumed in Kassala State in March 2024, led by a team from the National Center for Gastroenterology.

During that phase, Dr. Salah Dafallah and Dr. Mohamed Bushra continued providing services in collaboration with the National Center for Gastroenterology and Hepatology team. Dr. Hala Ibrahim Abu Al-Hassan and Dr. Radwan Mustafa also joined the advanced training program.

After stability was restored in Al-Jazira State, operations at the center resumed with the activation of the first phase (referral clinics), followed by the reactivation of biliary endoscopy services within the center. Technical and logistical support was provided by the Kassala branch of the National Center for Gastroenterology and Hepatology through weekly and biweekly support visits.

Thursday, October 30, 2025, marks a significant medical achievement, as the first biliary endoscopy procedures were performed entirely by the staff of Al-Jazira Center for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and Laparoscopic Surgery, representing a major step toward full self-reliance in delivering this highly specialized service.

The National Center for Gastroenterology extends its highest appreciation and gratitude to all participating teams:

Physicians

Nursing staff

Radiology and laboratory technicians

Biomedical engineering and statistics teams

Safety and security personnel

As well as the Center Director, Medical Director, Administrative Director, Financial Director, Engineering Administration, and Accounts and Audit Departments—whose dedication, professionalism, and national spirit made this remarkable achievement possible.

The National Center also reaffirms its full support for the upcoming phases, including:
1️⃣ Phase Two: Emergency gastrointestinal bleeding services and internal medicine admissions.
2️⃣ Phase Three (final): Gastrointestinal surgery services.

Best wishes and appreciation to the heroes of Al-Jazira Center, who have proven that healthcare services can rise again under all circumstances 🇸🇩❤️
