From Training Workshop to Patient Care – A Success Story in Localizing Gastroenterology Services in Port Sudan

In a step that reflects the determination of Sudanese medical staff to provide healthcare despite all challenges, the Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) workshop held at Port Sudan Central Police Hospital from February 18 to 20, 2025, successfully achieved its objectives. The workshop was supported by the National Center for Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases, in collaboration with the Khartoum Training Center of the World Gastroenterology Organization (WGO) and the Sudanese American Physicians Association (SAPA), laying the groundwork for localizing this vital service in the city.

This achievement was documented in the WGO Training Centers’ monthly newsletter for March 2025:

Following the workshop’s success, Port Sudan has become a permanent center for providing ERCP services, where:
✅ 5 biliary endoscopies were successfully performed on Friday, March 18, 2025, benefiting a total of 18 patients.
✅ Training of the hospital’s medical staff continued to ensure the sustainability of the service.

The National Center for Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases extends its sincere thanks to Dr. Amira Abbas Fadl for supporting the center’s efforts to localize gastroenterology and liver disease services in Sudan. The center also commends her efforts in advancing medical services in police hospitals across Sudan and her active role in maintaining healthcare provision for citizens while retaining both civilian and military medical staff.

Thanks are due to the entire medical and administrative team, and to everyone who contributed to the success of this milestone, which represents a qualitative leap in the course of healthcare in Sudan.
