As part of efforts to strengthen scientific collaboration and exchange expertise between medical professionals inside and outside Sudan, the Center organized a distinguished scientific meeting via the Zoom platform. The session featured a clinical discussion with the participation of Professor Mingyan Cai, Consultant in Advanced Surgery and Endoscopy at Zhongshan Center Hospital – Shanghai, China, and was attended by a number of Sudanese consultants in gastroenterology and endoscopy, gastrointestinal surgery, and diagnostic radiology.
During the meeting, a clinical case of a 28-year-old Sudanese man was discussed. The patient presented with progressive dysphagia, which gradually worsened until he became unable to eat normally, accompanied by symptoms including gastroesophageal reflux, weight loss, and chest and back pain.
The discussion reviewed the various investigations performed, including upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (OGD), imaging studies, and laboratory tests, which suggested a diagnosis of pseudoachalasia caused by extrinsic compression of the esophagus from a mass outside the stomach, leading to symptoms mimicking primary esophageal achalasia.
The session witnessed a rich scientific discussion among participants, with an exchange of perspectives on the most appropriate diagnostic approaches and management strategies for such cases. Emphasis was placed on the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration to ensure accurate diagnosis and the development of an effective treatment plan.
This initiative is part of a series of scientific meetings regularly organized by the Center, aimed at supporting Sudanese healthcare professionals and strengthening scientific collaboration with international experts, thereby contributing to the advancement of healthcare services in Sudan.
