In a historic step, the liver transplantation program was launched in Sudan, marked by the first successful liver transplantation at a government hospital in the Ibn Sina Center for Digestive System. The procedure was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Abdel Monem Tayeb, the director of the National Center for Digestive and Liver Diseases, with the participation of the renowned global surgeon, Professor Mohamed Reila, and his accompanying team, along with the surgical team of the National Center for Digestive and Liver Diseases.
Preparations for the first liver transplantation in Sudan began in 2013, with the localization of pancreatic and biliary surgery starting in 2016, supported by the Sudanese Ministry of Health. Over the past five years, more than 500 surgeries have been performed free of charge, saving the state approximately 8 million dollars, according to previous medical statistics. These operations achieved a high success rate, paving the way for the commencement of liver transplantation at the Ibn Sina Center for Digestive System with high confidence in the qualified and trained Sudanese medical team to ensure the sustainability of liver transplantation in Sudan.
The Federal Ministry of Health provided unlimited technical and financial support to ensure the success of the first liver transplantation procedure in a government institution. The Liver Transplantation Center was established with a 70% donation from the philanthropist Mohammed Saleh Idris and a 30% contribution from the Ministry of Health, aiming to localize treatment in Sudan and support the principle of health for all.
Liver transplantation is considered a delicate surgical procedure that requires high resources and specialized medical staff. The launch of the liver transplantation program in Sudan is part of the Sudanese government's efforts to develop the healthcare sector and provide quality medical services to Sudanese citizens.
