National Center for Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases Successfully Localizes Liver Transplantation as a Routine Free Service

The National Center for Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases has been working over the past ten years to localize liver transplantation, through continuous efforts to provide the necessary infrastructure and train specialized personnel. This endeavor culminated in the successful completion of two liver transplant operations at the Ibn Sina Gastroenterology Center.

Some of the key achievements of this project include:

🟩 Relying on a fully trained, integrated team that has successfully localized liver surgery and biliary-pancreatic tumor operations since 2017. This eliminated the need for overseas treatment, which previously cost at least $2 million annually, and made these services routinely available free of charge at the Ibn Sina Gastroenterology Center through the Unified Free Treatment Program supported by the Federal Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Finance and National Economy.

🟩 Continuing the Center’s training program, emphasizing the importance of having a fully integrated team. Several staff members were sent to India to train at Rela Hospital for Liver Transplantation in various specialties (nutrition, laboratory, blood bank, pathology, liver surgery, anesthesia, nursing, surgical assistants, and pharmacy) for periods ranging from two to four weeks. The Center also participated in the First Global Conference of the Egyptian Liver Transplant Society with a delegation of ten participants, including three liver consultants, an anesthesia consultant, a clinical immunology consultant, a radiology consultant, a transplant nursing coordinator, a clinical nutrition specialist, and a pathology consultant.

🟩 The visits to the Indian Liver Transplant Center and participation in the Egyptian Liver Transplant Society conference had a significant impact on boosting team morale, retaining medical staff committed to continuous medical education, and supporting the Center’s plan to continue and routinely localize liver transplantation services, establishing the Center as a regional hub serving Sudan and neighboring countries.
