The National Center for Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases is pleased to announce the localization of gastroenterology services in Kassala City, where 100 Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) procedures have been successfully performed since the launch of the service on March 26 at the Advanced Diagnostic Center.
This major achievement comes after the Center was forced to relocate its services from Wad Madani to Kassala following the entry of the Rapid Support Forces into Al-Jazira State. The accomplishment was made possible through generous support from the Federal Ministry of Health, in addition to strong cooperation and coordination with the Kassala State Ministry of Health and the Advanced Diagnostic Center.
A total of 100 ERCP procedures were performed for patients from various states across Sudan, including: 21 cases from Al-Jazira, 19 cases from Kassala (10 from Halfa, 7 from Kassala City, and 2 from Khashm El Girba), 16 from Khartoum, 11 from White Nile, 8 cases each from Sennar, River Nile, and Northern State, 6 from North Kordofan, 4 from the Red Sea State, and 3 cases each from Blue Nile and Al-Qadarif. Patients coming from outside Kassala State accounted for 93.5% of all cases.
ERCP is an advanced endoscopic procedure used to diagnose and treat diseases of the bile ducts and pancreas, including obstructive jaundice caused by conditions such as gallstones and tumors. This service plays a vital role in patient care and works in close integration with surgical specialties. Notably, the service is provided free of charge to all patients, supported by the Federal Ministry of Health’s Free Treatment Program and the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning.
The outstanding medical team at the National Center for Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases stands as the driving force behind this success. Dedicated physicians, nurses, and technicians demonstrate exceptional professionalism and commitment, always placing patient care as their highest priority.
This achievement marks not an endpoint, but the beginning of a long journey of continued service and expansion. It represents a key step toward localizing this service in other states, as healthcare professionals are currently being trained to deliver ERCP services, in coordination with the Federal Ministry of Health, to provide the necessary equipment—including endoscopes and fluoroscopy units—across Sudan in line with the Center’s strategic plan.
