The Undersecretary of the Federal Ministry of Health, Dr. Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim, praised the efforts of the National Center for Gastrointestinal Diseases and Surgery in localizing gastrointestinal services within Sudan. He affirmed his full support for the continued provision of services in the states, particularly in Kassala and Al-Jazira, in addition to gastrointestinal endoscopy units in several states, where treatment—especially biliary endoscopy—is provided with government support.
He also called for the restoration of liver transplantation services, stressing the importance of developing a clear vision for re-establishing these services. He highlighted the importance of utilizing health insurance to reduce the financial burden on patients, particularly in relation to diagnostic investigations and gastrointestinal surgeries.
The Undersecretary further commended the Center’s international participation and African representation in scientific conferences and forums, as well as the opportunities opened for training medical staff from the Center in China and several African countries.
During his meeting with the Director of the National Center for Gastrointestinal Diseases and Surgery, Dr. Abdelmonem Al-Tayeb, the latter presented a report on the Center’s performance over the past period. He explained the continued provision of medical services to patients, the availability of free treatment for liver transplant recipients, and the provision of free endoscopic services for biliary diseases. He also noted ongoing efforts to add biliary surgery services, in addition to developing the specialty and providing the necessary infrastructure and equipment. He emphasized that arrangements are currently underway to resume liver transplantation, stressing the importance of retaining qualified medical staff to ensure the continuity of high-quality services.
